This week we’re featuring another fascinating jewel of our beloved
community of Dewey City: “The Mount Zion Primitive Baptist Church’s
Daycare/Kindergarten. Mount Zion Primitive Baptist Church was
established in October 1894 with about 50 members under the authority
of the Middle Florida Primitive Baptist Association. Years later, New
Jerusalem Primitive Baptist merged with Mount Zion Primitive Baptist
Church. At the time of the merger both Churches were being led by
Elder F.R. Monroe.
In 1959, the kindergarten structure was added to house the kindergarten
program, which was started in 1932 by Elder Monroe. Mount Zion
maintained the kindergarten until a Georgia instituted a statewide program
in 1980. At that time the kindergarten was converted to a Daycare Center.
Today, the Mount Zion Daycare Center continues to be a driving force for
providing early childhood education within Thomasville, Georgia.
